Year 5

In Year 5, the children are supported by the following adults:
Jamie Patrick (Class teacher)
Claire Young (Teaching Assistant)

We aim to create a learning environment that encourages academic development as well as social development. Ultimately, if a child is happy, they're happy to learn!

The broad range of topics will engage and encourage all children to develop a passion for learning throughout the school year and beyond.

Year 5 Class Charter:

We listen and show respect to others when they are talking.
We can work together and independently.
We are honest about our learning and know that it's okay to make mistakes.
We are passionate and excited to learn new things.
We are supportive and helpful.
We are positive about our learning: we seek challenge and never give up.

Does our Class Charter relate to our school values of
Confidence, Compassion & Curiosity?

This week in Year 5

In our English lessons, Year 5 have been looking at poetry by Benjamin Zephaniah. His poems are themed around causes that he feels strongly about. We have been inspired by the poem It would not be very good... The poem has encouraged the children to write poems about diversity which links to our Worship theme of Compassion, PSHE topic Celebrating Diversity and Anti-bullying week 2021.

Year 5 Barn Owl class have created a school link with Manor Junior School in Barking to hear their ideas and poems about bullying.
Here is the worship created by the Barn Owls: Year 5 Compassion Worship

Optional Home Learning

Seasonal Menus
As part of our COP26 Eco week, children started to design monthly menus to help people eat more seasonally. This has been proven to greatly reduce the food miles and therefore carbon footprint of your plate.

Children can log into edit their menus at using the below details:
password: Stoborough1

(Please upload any extra Home Learning to Google Classroom.)
In Art we have been looking at the artist Christoph Niemann
The children were inspired to look at everyday objects more closely to create some interesting artwork.

Why not try to create your own at home?

In Humanities, we have been learning about the Maya in modern-day Central America. Children found out about the children at the School of Hope in Guatemala. It is funded by the charity Education For the Children.
Here is the video of the 5th and 6th grade children sharing information about their interests with Year 5 Barn Owls.
Do you think their lives will be very different to yours?

Bandlab is a fantastic online programme that budding DJs can use to compose and create their own music.
Year 5 can join the Band Lab Class by following this link here.

You may require the following code: ZZFQDVZ

At the end of every half term, the children should continue to work on their tree projects.
They should have chosen a tree in or near their home that they can view regularly through the year.
Have a look at some examples from previous students.
