At Stoborough, we want playtimes to be a happy, active and important part of every child’s school day. Our Positive Play approach is inspired by the principles of Outdoor Play and Learning (OPAL), giving children opportunities to be active, creative, curious and sociable in our wonderful school grounds.

Positive Play is closely linked to our Christian vision:

Playtimes are a wonderful opportunity to see our school family in action. Children are encouraged to play together across different year groups, building friendships, learning from one another and developing a real sense of belonging. Our older children are fantastic role models for younger pupils and help them to feel happy, safe and included.

This begins right from Reception, where every child is supported by a Year 5 buddy. Our buddies help our youngest children settle into school life, join in with games and grow in confidence. As children move into Year 1, mixed-age play continues to help them develop their independence and friendships across the school.

Positive Play also brings our school values to life:

Confidence – trying new things, making choices, solving problems and becoming more independent.

Compassion – including others, sharing, helping younger children and learning to resolve disagreements.

Curiosity – exploring, imagining, creating games and discovering different ways to use our outdoor environment.

Through play, children develop so much more than physical skills. They learn to communicate, cooperate, negotiate, problem-solve, manage their emotions and build positive relationships.

Most importantly, we want our children to have fun, enjoy being outdoors and experience the joy of playing together as one Stoborough family.
