Art and Design

The children painted a self-portrait for a whole-school display, with a focus on tints and tones.

At Stoborough we believe that art is a vital and integral part of our children’s education. Art stimulates creativity and imagination. It provides visual, tactile and sensory experiences and a unique way of responding to the world, enabling children to communicate what they see, feel and think through the use of colour, line, texture, form and pattern. We encourage children to explore ideas and meanings through the work of a range of artists and designers. Careful planning, that includes sequencing of skills and processes taught, enables a clear progression of learning that engages, inspires and challenges the children to experiment, invent and create their own works of art. Equipping children with the key knowledge and skills helps them progress and be able to think critically, developing an understanding of art and design and recognising how art shapes history and contributes to different cultures across the world. Art education provides opportunities for all children to share and express their individual creativity. Art contributes and supports children’s well-being, providing quality time to self-reflect and ponder on the wider world. Art also provides children with a natural sense of wonder and curiosity about the natural and human made world around them.
