                                                                  Year One: Fantastic Frogs!

Welcome to our pad.

Year 1 Team:

Class Teachers: Mrs Hallisey and Mrs Derrick

Teaching Assistant: Mrs P

Year 1 is an important year in your child’s education as it marks the transition from The Foundation Stage to The National Curriculum.

We try to make sure this transition is as smooth as possible by continuing to provide opportunities for purposeful play and creative activities, as well ensuring children reach their full potential in a wide range of subjects.

Your child’s well-being is our priority; as happy children make successful learners.

Autumn 1

A Jolly Postman came one day…

We explore fairytale characters and discover the different places on his map, over the hills and far away. We visit town, country and coast; stopping to learn more about the rockpools on the beach. We create our own landscapes inspired by Ted Harrison.

Autumn 2

‘Lighthouse Parties, Land Ahoy, Me Hearties!’

As the winter approaches, our time at the seaside becomes a little more stormy and we find out about Grace Darling and her daring lighthouse rescue and delve into pirates from Poole, including the infamous Harry Paye.

Spring Term

All Creatures Great and Small.

We answer the question ‘Why Don’t Penguins Need to Fly?’

We find out about emperor penguins in Antarctica and compare wildlife there with The Arctic. We read ‘Lars the Polar Bear,’ and discover more about the animals he met on his travels. We agree that ‘ Chameleons are Cool,’ and some unusual pets visit the classroom sssssssssssssssssssay no more!

We also remember the heroic animals that helped us in times of war and look at the animals included in the Hyde Park memorial statue.

Summer 1

The Garden of Creation

We get green fingered and plant beans, lettuces, sunflowers and marigolds. We share stories like Sid the Seed, The last Noo Noo and The Lucky Seed. We create golden trees in the style of Klimt and look at some of the strange plants that can be found around the world.

Summer 2

Superhero Me!

We share the book ‘Lucy’s Picture,’ and investigate our five senses in Science. We discover who our real-life superheroes are and learn about some heroes who have made a difference to the lives of people today e.g. Louis Braille.
